Ricky Gervais: Politics Video

Politics is a stand-up comedy performed by Ricky Gervais and directed by Dominic Brigstocke. The 68 minutes stand-up special has been released on 15 November 2004 by the Universal Pictures UK. The DVD also contains a special features,Karl Pilkington.

The stand-up comedy opens up with a short comedy video which is incredibly funny. The stand-up comedian outlines "three political hot potatoes" on a passer-by in a wheelchair (actually played by The Office producer Ash Atalla). This clip predicts the subjects of the stand-up comedy show: racial problems (the passer by wheelchair fellow is an Egyptian), homosexuality (he is gay when he can), and peoples with disabilities.

As the name would suggest, you may think that this stand-up comedy special is all about politics. Well, I have to admit that the comedy show is not very political but rather a series of funny sketches with loose references to politics. The stand-up comedy is actually a mix of observational and goofy humor while the stand-up comedian mentions those unmentionable taboos that other stand-up comedians dare not enter in to. The stand-up comedian highlights some important issues but finds the funny side to everything. It is very funny though and worth a watch.

The stand-up comedian has a way of performing his routines and talking about things that just make them even more hysterical. The holocaust wasn't funny at all, yet the stand-up comedian managed to convince his audience that it was. Some sketches during the hour performance are incredibly funny: talking about Humpty Dumpty, the morality-tale of the two mice, mentioning about his mum thinking his Che Guevara poster was a picture of Robert Lindsay. The stand-up comedy show reaches its peak when talking about comedian’s favorite leaflet.

I was disappointed when the comedy show ended. I could easily have sat there all night and listened to the stand-up comedian discuss politics. At the end of the show, I can say one thing for sure- politics has never been so funny!

At 1 hour 8 minutes, the stand-up comedy is just short enough to stop the mind drifting, and just long enough to ensure you're not being ripped off. In addition, the extras are well worth a watch, leaving the whole DVD package a worthwhile investment. Highly recommended!
