Ricky Gervais being sued for plagiarism over Flanimals

Ricky Gervais is being sued by author John Savage over the copyright issues for Flanimals.

British comedian Ricky Gervais has been accused of stealing John Savage's design and theme idea from his book Captain Pottie's Wildlife Encyclopedia.

Mr Savage's book Captain Pottie's wildlife Encyclopedia was published in 2000, four years before Ricky Gervais' Flanimals and both books includes cartoon illustrations of imaginary animals.

Ricky Gervais' spokeswoman stated that:"This story goes back several years, when John Savage first made contact with Ricky Gervais".

"At the time it was made clear that the concept and illustrations of Flanimals pre-existed John Savage's work."

Savage told the BBC: "The next stage is the High Court will be sent a copy of the writ to Mr. Gervais' lawyers and they have two weeks to decide whether to defend or accede to my request."

"To date Ricky Gervais has not received any formal court proceedings from Mr. Savage."- Gervais' representatives added.

Ricky Gervais' Flanimals became a best-seller and is currently being adapted into a Hollywood movie, which is scheduled for release in 2011.
