Remebering the late Joey Waldon - a comedian, cartoonist and an amazing artist

Joey Waldon’s talent is his legacy. The funny, talented and artistic comedian and cartoonist died Sunday, May 12 after fighting cancer for three years. He was 57.

He was one of the late-eighties comedians from Austin who debuted at the former Laff Stop Club and brought life to Velveeta Room. His favourite place was Esther's Follies where he spent many nights drinking, talking with other comedians while performing for one another. The co-owner Shannon Sedwick remembers Waldon as “the crazy grandfather of the group, quirky, eccentric, way out there in his style, but loving and supportive of all styles of comedy."

As a cartoonist, he used to feature a flat and angular style in “Chronicle”.He used to paint with his soul and, as he said, "My work is personal, truthful and, despite some of it's darkness, filled with love. Art is my Novocain, my inoculation, the vaccination, fuel for my imagination, a calming force in the chaos and lies. I consider myself to be a Pop Expressionist, a Primitive Contemporary, an outsider looking in, a Surreal Estate Agent. A lot of my favorite artists have gone crazy, died penniless, committed suicide, or all of the above. These are my role models."

Kerry Awn may have described him best on his Facebook page: "A prince amongst clowns. An artist amongst copiers. A force of gentleness." We will miss him and his many great works.
