Amnesty Sands Up for the Freedom of Speech!

Stand-up comedy is, in essence, a human right because it gives the opportunity to speak one’s mind. But this was not the case for Burmese stand-up comedian Zarganar who was sentenced to 35 years in jail in 2008 for criticizing the response of the military junta to Cyclone Nargis. Therefore, South London Amnesty group is campaigning for the release of the stand-up comedian.

At this comedy event will perform young rising stars of stand-up comedy like James Acaster, Andrew Doyle, James Mullinger and Patrick Cahill. They are all trying to raise funds for the charity and awareness in the case of comedian Zarganar.

The event will take place upstairs in the Ballroom of the Bedford pub in Balham, Wandsworth on Saturday, July 16, starting 7:30 p.m. After the stand-up comedy show, at 11 p.m. people will also have the chance to dance until 2 a.m. with DJ Retro Electro.
