Bill Bailey Formed a Double Act with Toby Longworth- the Rubber Bishops

Bill Bailey formed a double act with Toby Longworth, in 1984, called the Rubber Bishops. The two stand up comedians were quite famous among the club circuit, partly due to their rigorous schedule. They sometimes had as many as three or four gigs a night.

With the Rubber Bishops the stand up comedian Bill Bailey began developing his own unique style, mixing in musical parodies with deconstructions of or variations on traditional jokes. It is said that one time, after a reviewer once criticized his act for its lack of jokes, Bailey returned the following night, at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, to perform a set composed entirely of punchlines.

At some point in 1989, Bill Bailey’s comedy partner Toby Longworth left the Rubber Bishops to join the RSC and was replaced by Martin Stubbs.
