Kate Clinton Biography (Personal Life, Career)

Kate Clinton is an American comedian well known for her political commentary from a gay/lesbian point of view. The stand-up comedian has made numerous appearances on television, and has served as grand marshal of gay pride parades. She had been working as a part-time commentator on CNN when the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan began.

Personal Life

The stand-up comedian was born on November 9, 1947 in Buffalo, New York in a catholic family. After graduating from the Moyne College, a small Jesuit liberal college, the stand-up comedian taught high school English for eight years before becoming a famous stand-up comedian.

When, not doing stand-up comedy, Kate is organizing hundreds of fundraising dinners and events which have raised millions of dollars for The National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Ms. Foundation, the New York City LGBT Community Center, the Gill Foundation, and the STREB dance lab to name a few.

Currently the stand-up comedian lives in New York City and Provincetown, MA with her partner, Urvashi Vaid.


The stand-up comedian began her stand-up career in 1981 using her lesbianism, Catholicism and current politics for her sketches. Kate is a feminist humorist who, thanks to her routines, proved that being a lesbian can be funny.

With a career spanning almost thirty years, the stand-up comedian has performed her routines through economic booms and busts, gay movements and gay markets, lesbian chic and queer eyes, and eight presidential inaugurals.

The stand-up comedian had many comedy tours and appearances in one-women-shows as Climate Change(2007), Hilarity Clinton (2008), Yes on K8 (2009), Lady Ha Ha(2010), Correct Me If I'm Right, All Het Up and Kate's Out Is In. The stand-up comedian’s latest tour is The Glee Party and will tour the US and Canada in 2011.

The stand-up comedian has written three books so far: Don't Get Me Started (2000), What the L" (2005) and I Told You So (2009).The one that believes that comedy and humor gets us through peacetime, wartime, scoundrel time and economic down times, writes bi-monthly columns for the national magazine, The Progressive and has been a past columnist for the national gay newsmagazine The Advocate. In 2005 the stand-up comic writer was nominated in the humor category for the prestigious 2005 Lambda Literary Award, considered to be the highest accolade for a book from the LGBT community.

The stand-up comedian is extremely active on all the social networking. She blogs, vlogs, twitters, facebooks. The lesbian comedian recently upgraded website Kateclinton.com and her weekly video blog is a must-see. Clinton also blogs for Huffington Post, The Progressive, Bilerico, NYC Up and Out, Beacon Broadside and Olivia Connect. The stand-up comedian has written her commentary about gay/lesbians, for The New York Times, Women’s Review Of Books.

The stand-up comedian had numerous TV appearances and talk shows since she started to perform stand-up comedy. The comic has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show, Joy Behar Show, Good Morning America, Nightline, Entertainment Tonight, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The L Word. Clinton also had numerous news and talk shows on Comedy Central, Lifetime, LOGO, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNN, and C-Span. She hosted In The Life, and The World According To Us and has her one woman show, Talking A Blue Streak, was later released as a DVD.

The stand-up comedian opened the Gay Games VII ceremony in Chicago, performing her routines on the stage. The comic also performed stand-up comedy at the 2001 V-Day celebration of The Vagina Monologues in a sold-out Madison Square Garden benefit to end violence against women. In 2001 the stand-up comedian also replaced Dick Cavett on Broadway as the Narrator of The Rocky Horror Show. One year later the stand-up comedian appeared for six weeks in the New York production of The Vagina Monologues.

In addition to stand-up comedy and live performance, the stand-up comedian acted in the film The Secret Lives of Dentists directed by Alan Rudolph and is one of four lesbian comics featured in Laughing Matters, an award-winning documentary produced by Andrea Meyerson. The stand-up comedian voiced the narrator in Joan Biren’s documentary No Secrets Anymore – the Times of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons and has a cameo appearance in Dee Mosbacher’s documentary Radical Harmonies.

The lesbian comic also appeared in Mom’s Apple Pie: The Heart of the Lesbian Mothers’ Custody Movement (October 2006) and recently she acted in the documentary Out in America, a documentary that offers a portrait of the vast majority of the nation's LGBT community.

The stand-up comedian has received many awards from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Pioneer.
