Arj Barker is an American stand up comedian and actor most known for his stand up comedy shows and film appearances like the HBO sitcom Flight of the Conchords. He enjoys a great success in Australia were he currently lives.

Personal Life

Arj Barker is only the stand up comedian stage name. His actual name is Arjan Singh Aulakh and he was born on August 12, 1974 in San Anselmo, California. Arj is half-Indian, half-European and his father also has Sikh heritage. Arj Barker’s father was an engineer and his mother was an artist.

When he was in high school, soon to be stand up comedian Arj Barker had a job as the clean up guy at a local deli. He cites this job as the worst one he ever had because it was filthy and didn’t pay as much.

Stand up comedian Arj Barker suffers from psoriasis, a chronic immune-mediated disease that appears on the skin which is not contagious. Even if he uses real parts of his life in his stand up comedy shows, Arj Barker doesn’t like to talk about this because he would not like people to think he is questing for sympathy.

At the present, stand up comedian set his home in Australia where he frequently performs his stand up comedy shows.

Career

Arj Barker made his first notable appearance in the world of comedy at Premium Blend in 1997. His first appearance was soon followed by appearances on the shows Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Glass House. Short time after his TV appearances, Arj Barker released his first stand up comedy album called Arj Barker: Issue Were Here, in 1999. He also co-wrote, alongside Doug Benson and Tony Camin, an off-Broadway show called The Marijuana-Logues, the title being a parody after The Vagina Monologues.

Stand up comedian and actor Arj Barker had the honor to be the host of Comedy Central Presents show twice. First time it was on the last episode of Season 3 which aired on 20 September 2000 and the second time on the 13th episode of Season 10, aired on 31 March 2006.

In 2004 Arj Barker received from NBC the lead role for sitcom Nearly Nirvana, originally scheduled for 2004 but Barker was later replaced in the lead role by the show's creator, Ajay Sahgal, and the show never aired.

Arj Barker was featured in Comedy Central's animated series Shorties Watchin' Shorties and he also appeared as the indifferent New Yorker Dave in the HBO sitcom Flight of the Conchords, playing Bret and Jemaine's friend.

The stand up comedian Arj Barker has his own Flash series, Arj and Poopy, based on some of his stand-up material. The show stars him and his cat, Poopy, who talks by farting. The Arj and Poopy series is animated by Bernard Derriman and the series has been syndicated to AtomFilms.

Poopy, the cat is a big star as well: he has acquired his own MySpace blog, which lists his hobbies as eating, watching TV, paper chains, star gazing, train spotting, golf caddying, bowling, fly fishing and chess. The episode "Unlucky in Love" won the Annecy 2006 animated film festival Internet Selection. The series also has a planned spin-off called Bouncy the Dog.

Last Comic Standing featured Arj Barker as a contestant on the first episode of the fifth season, where he advanced to the Los Angeles semi-final round but he failed to progress to the final 10 in the semi-final round.

Among his stand up comedy albums we can name Live (2006), Balls (2008), Forever (2010) and his most prestigious LYAO (2010). Stand up comedian Arj Barker subsequently enjoyed success in Australia.
