John Bishop is a British stand up comedian, actor and radio person. He is best known for his appearance in the teen drama Skin, broadcasted on E4 and his radio show Bishop's Sunday Service at the Liverpool radio station Radio City 96.7.
Born on 30 November 1966 as John Joseph Bishop, he was born in Liverpool Mill Road maternity hospital. The stand up comedian lived in Huyton for a short period and then his family moved to a place near Runcorn where he grew up.
John Bishop started working in 1990 as a Medical Representative for pharmaceutical company Syntex. He remained in this business until 2006, being a sale and marketing person for a pharmaceutical company, a company car and pension plan. Bishop gave it all up to become a full-time comedian.
The stand up comedian married Melanie in 1994 and has three children with her. He currently lives in Manchester but he is a big fan of Liverpool Football Club fan. John Bishop is not the only one in his family with an affinity for football. His brother, Eddie, is a former professional footballer with Tranmere Rovers and Chester City.
John Bishop is best known as a comedian, but before he got into comedy he had a brief career in football as well. Bishop played semi-professional football for clubs like Southport, Hyde United and Winsford United. The soon-to-be stand up comedian was pretty good at football. He won the Liverpool Senior Cup with Southport in 1991, beating a Liverpool side containing Jamie Redknapp in the final at Goodison Park. He was playing as a midfielder. In his entire career as a football player, John Bishop appeared for Hyde 41 times, scoring 7 goals between November 1988 and February 1990 and won to second place in the Northern Premier League with them. He can be proud with playing for Southport 35 times and scored 7 goals between March 1990 and April 1991, as well. On 14 May 2007 John Bishop played as a substitute for the Liverpool Legends in the Hillsborough Memorial Game at Anfield.
As a stand up comedian, John Bishop made his first appearance in October 2000 and by the end of 2001 he made it to the final of all the major new act competitions, including So You Think You're Funny, the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Awards, the BBC New Comedy Awards and the City Life North West Comedian of The Year Award. He won the City Life North West Comedian of The Year Award. The stand up comedian John Bishop was named best newcomer by BBC Radio Merseyside in 2002.
In 2007 comedian John Bishop had his first television appearance on the RTE topical-comedy show The Panel where he regularly sat as a panelist until 2008. Bishop also appeared on the Channel 4 panel show 8 out of 10 Cats before and on the BBC's Live at the Apollo. In 2009 John Bishop started his own TV program on LFC TV called John Bishop meets…, where he interviews former Liverpool football legends. Starting 2009, the comedian portrayed Emily and Katie Fitch's father in Skins, during series 3 and 4 (until 2010).
John Bishop’s quick accession in the world of stand up comedy did not stop here. He was determined to be one of the best in stand up comedy, so in 2009 he appeared as the first act on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow in Manchester. The same year, Bishop appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well. The year 2009 was a full year for the stand up comedian who also appeared in Channel 4's short series Comedy Showcase, and was a contestant on Celebrity Mastermind. But he didn’t stop here. His ambition and hard work got him into BBC Three’s sitcom Lunch Monkeys as fireman Terry and appeared five times on 5 Live's Fighting Talk quiz show, having won four times on the program.
2010 was another full year for stand up comedian John Bishop. He appeared as a celebrity guest team captain on What Do Kids Know? , on BBC's Mock the Week, and Radio 4's Act Your Age. The year 2010 was the year when John Bishop released his first stand up comedy DVD 'Elvis has left the building’ on 15 November 2010. His stand up comedy video got him a nomination for the Edinburgh Comedy Award. On March 30 the same year, stand up comedian John Bishop also took part in Channel 4's Comedy Gala, a benefit show held in aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. 2010 also got John Bishop a Best Male Comedy Breakthrough Artist award at the British Comedy Awards.
Stand up comedian begun 2011 in force as well as in the past years. He became the Number 1 'Star in a reasonably priced car' on Top Gear on Sunday January 23, 2011. Bishop has big projects for 2011. He currently has a stand-up/sketch show on BBC One entitled John Bishop's Britain and he is planning on releasing his second stand up comedy video on 14 November 2011 called The Sunshine Tour.
